Los Angeles Apartments | Moving Slowly in the Fast Lane
Moving to LA has many perks — climate, entertainment, culture and opportunity. But because these opportunities appeal to so many people, it is a crowded place. Also, it is very spread out. That means lots of drivers, which means lots of traffic. But there are many ways to avoid the traffic, and there are even more ways to love LA. It is a popular city for good reason. If you are planning to move there, just make sure you know enough about the city, otherwise you could get caught moving slowly in the fast lane.
Darrell Clarke became a fan of BART as an economics major in the 1970s at UC Berkeley. Today, he’s driving his Prius along the route of the Expo Line, talking about what it took to get the project approved by the MTA. The light-rail line will connect downtown’s 7th Street station with Culver City by 2010, with plans to go all the way to Santa Monica.
The 53-year-old Clarke strikes the casual look of a college professor on a beach outing, with his salt-and-pepper hair, plaid shirt, khakis, and loafers. He got on-the-job training as a community organizer, in part, by attending the grovel-and-grill MTA public hearings. His first one was way back in 2000. One of the speakers to go to the podium that day was Congressman Javier Becerra, a Democrat who showed up to support the extension of the Gold Line to East L.A. He faced then-Mayor Richard Riordan and other project opponents. Clarke remembers the congressman framing the debate in terms of equity. “You have so many transit-dependent people on the Eastside. Don’t they deserve the same level of service as other parts of the city?”
But Riordan and others thought it should be a busway and not a light-rail project. Talk to inhabitants of the Ivory Tower about transportation and be ready for a lecture about the sacrifices – or their word, choices – that will soon face drivers and the public.
Academics want drivers to start paying now for the roads that they use. They want to jack up parking rates to reduce the number of cars on the road. They want politicians to be brave and increase the gasoline tax, which hasn’t been touched since 1995.
Genevieve Giuliano is director of the federally funded METRANS Transportation Center at USC. Her austere office in the public policy building is lined with bookcases packed with more three-ring binders and government reports than works of literature. A complicated chart depicting the goods movement in Los Angeles hangs over a table where someone else might put an inspiring piece of art.
So there you have it, a couple of different accounts on how to live in LA without succumbing to its notorious traffic. It is also a good idea to use a rental apartment company in order to find the best deals on apartments and other property.
